Jo Newman : Influential practitioner, educator and maker.

BA Fashion & Textiles, Winchester School of Art

MA Art & Design: Interdisciplinary Practices, Birmingham School of Art, Birmingham City University

Lecturer: Illustration, Birmingham City University

Jo Newman grew up on the edge of Dartmoor, isolated from city life and surrounded by open spaces. Devoid of social interaction, the Internet and the burden of commercialism, an exasperating reliance on community transport lead to a compatibility with hitch hiking, walking the hills and wandering the lanes to define her creative future.

Her current work speculates on new ways of living, adaption, Nomadic movement, narrative, and environmental circumstances.

As a University lecturer, the pedagogy of Illustration forms a major part of her day to day teaching; feeding directly into creative enrichment activities which look at the relationships between Space, Performance, Drawing and Response to evaluate learner motivation; exposition; direction of activity; criticism; and imitation.

This is new, emerging and ongoing research.
